I'm back (again)

Hello Humans

Good news everyone! I have started work on the next chapter of the comic formerly known as 'The Last Human' and is now collectively called 'Shadow's End'. I have been a busy bee during my hiatus. I've upgraded my hardware and I'm also switching the software I'm using. I have been using Adobe Photoshop which is an excellent program but it's only available on a subscription, which I get through work. I don't want my comics work to be dependent on any resources from my job so I'm switching my main drawing software to Krita. I've done a few tests and it works beautifully.

This past weekend I participated in a local comics event called DCAF (Dartmouth Comic Arts Festival) where I had a table and peddled my wares. I only ordered 6 copies of THE LAST HUMAN, not expecting to sell any... but I sold them all! Some people actually asked me to sign it! I am flabbergasted. This was the sign that I should once again start up the weekly update machine, and so I shall.

I have been working on the writing side of things, planning out the next arc in greater detail and I'm ready to plunge back in to a regular schedule. The updates will start on a new comic called 'Shadow's End' but I'm going to build up a bit of a buffer before I launch it. I will give a bit of notice and make an announcement once I have a date worked out.

Peace

Hey Humans

..so I've been on hiatus, but I haven't been idle. Here's a rundown of what has been keeping me busy:

1. Work. I have resumed travel for my day job in the animation industry. It was great to see my industry friends again. Also my show is getting closer to production. It's like rolling a large rock up a hill, and every time I get to the top of a hill I discover that there's another hill on top. But as soon as there's an official announcement about my series I will share it with you, if you're curious.

2. Print ediiton of The Last Human. Print is very different than webcomics. I always knew this, but I can tell you that even as someone that has come from a background in graphic design I have been having a hell of a time getting this print edition together. And it's still not perfect, but if I keep trying to make it perfect then it will never be done. I have great hope for this new print place I'm trying out called LULU. I placed an order for my proof copy today and if it's good, I'll share the link for anyone to order their own copy if they want. I really wanted to keep the price low, so people could order it if they want to without too much financial pain.

3. Script version of The Last Human. Since I work in animation, I figured I would try and pitch The Last Human as an animated project, either a series or a feature. The first thing I need is a script. I've written for TV before, so there's no learning curve here like there is for the printing thing. I should have the script ready in a couple of months I guess. Not putting too much pressure on myself with this piece.

4. Life, family, mental health. Just being a human is tough and takes some attention sometimes. Camping is good. And meditation. I also read a great series of sci fi books 'The Three Body Problem'

Okay so lastly I want to share this link with you. This is a PDF of the remastered, final edit of THE LAST HUMAN, as it will appear in print. Please feel free to download for your own reading pleasure. Thank you all for being so awesome and joining me on this webcomics journey. I hope you stay with me as I continue into the future!

SHADOW'S END Volume 01 'The Last Human' PDF

EDIT: I just got the printed edition back from LULU and it's beautiful. Couldn't ask for better, and I was able to keep the price down to something I consider reasonable. If you want to order a copy, here's the link to the LULU webstore:

I broke the comments button...

..but then I fixed it!

April 18, 2022

A couple weeks ago I tried removing the code for the 'topwebcomics' vote button and 'rocket banner exchange' - I decided it was too cluttered and took it out but I guess botched it and comments wasn't working for a couple of weeks.

Thanks RockB for alerting me to the problem. I noticed there were no comments, but I thought maybe people were just... not commenting... or something...

anyways they work now, so comment away, humans

The End of the Beginning

Hello Humans

I have just started drawing the last scene of Volume 1. This is a scene that's been living in my head for 6 years. It's turning out great - different than I imagined but I've learned to stay flexible with my pre-conceptions while I'm writing. I decide on the destination but it's the characters tell me what path the story takes, trying to control it too tightly just leads to writers' block. I started out on this journey a long time ago, and now it's nearing the first big milestone. It's a strange feeling, exhilerating I would say. I've been chipping away at this block of granite for years, working in my spare time, inching this project forward. As many of you webcomic creators know, this takes a prolonged focus of will and effort. I've learned a lot on the way, and I plan to use those lessons for the next leg of the journey. Better organization and preparation will make a lot of difference. I plan to complete Volume 2 in signifigantly less time.

The 'season finale' will drop on April 2, 2022. I hope it is satisfying and that it also leaves you eager to find out what happens next. Next there will be an epilogue and then a hiatus of indeterminate duration while I prepare the collected edition of Volume 1 and make preparations for Volume 2.

Thank you all for reading this story and making your comments.

Burnout is real

by r-o-o-t-w-o-o-d
Feb 11, 2022 (yes, I inintentioanlly posted this twice. Sign of burnout, I think)

Hey Humans

You may have noticed that there was no update last weekend... apologies! Around this time last year the same thing happened; work got hectic and I just couldn't keep up with the weekly updates. The pressure of making those deadlines started to wear away at my joy of working on the comic, so I took a sudden and unannounced break. Not doing that again! But I am taking off the pressure of weekly updates for now. And I'm also letting you all know that I haven't died, and I'm still working on the comic... just at a more relaxed pace.

So THE LAST HUMAN will update sporatically for the next few months while I am sucked into the animation production world for a while. I am VERY CLOSE to concluding the first arc, and when it's done I'll put out a printed and PDF collection. Just hard to specify an exact date right now.

I have learned from experience that burnout is painful and it's better to just slow down a bit than to completely crash. I am so thankful for all the support and feedback I've had from regular readers of THE LAST HUMAN, and I promise not to disappear. There will be a small update this Saturday, and the next one will be... after that...
